A Visit to the “Other Side”

Yesterday in Rockville's lovely Town Square, former GOP Governor Bob Ehrlich launched his campaign to reclaim the seat he lost in 2006, when voters rejected him in favor of Democrat Martin O'Malley.  I stopped by to see what was happening, which surprised some people since I am a lifelong, partisan Democrat.

Since I'm running in a contested Democratic primary, some of my supporters wondered if I should be seen at a rally staged by 'the other side.'

On the contrary! I was greeted warmly by friends and former colleagues from Annapolis, many of whom I will be working with again should I be fortunate enough to win my campaign for the State Senate.  And while it was great to see my Republican buddies, the event reminded me of how proud I am to be a Democrat -- someone who will stand up on issues like education, the environment, and a woman's right to choose.

But I’m also proud to be an independent-minded Democrat who will reach out to as many people as possible -- including Republicans and Independents -- if it would help me serve the people of my district.

I told one Ehrlich advisor that I've worked hard for approximately 200 Democratic candidates at the federal, state, and local level during my 30-year political career.  But after the voters have spoken in November, partisanship should give way to governing, and citizens' needs should dictate alliances and decisions.

My bottom line?  No party and no individual has a monopoly on good ideas.  My focus would be on producing the results that the residents of Rockville, Gaithersburg and Garrett Park deserve.

I would love to hear from you, dear Blog reader!  How partisan are you?  How partisan do you believe candidates should be, either when seeking office or after being elected?  Please send an email to Blog@CherylKagan.org or click on the "Comments" link below to express your views.  Please be sure to indicate which post (#46) you're addressing.

Thanks for reading.  I will post again soon.

Blog Post #46 - Great Post Cheryl. If every party were filled with people who felt and operated this way - all levels of government would get a lot more done for the people and would probably do so much more efficiently. Win or lose Cheryl - people in Rockville and MoCo need to know how lucky they are to have you in our community willing to ask the questions and work with everyone for positive results.

ja, ditto that. My first party event left a naaasty taste in my mouth. And my first foray into national politics was stymied by my candidate (finally somebody I believed in!) getting canned by party infighting to make way for a more viable (read: more centrist and better funded) candidate. Let's have a fundraiser for Cheryl, shall we?

Del. Kagan--I read your blog and thought it was very well put. our legisators need to get down to doing the business of the state and representing the interests of their constituents, and stop worrying so much about all this partisan stuff. somehow the people got lost in the power shuffle!good luck in your primary. REALLY great blog Cheryl. You are EXACTLY what we need. Too often we see politicians more concerned about one side winning and making the other side look bad than sitting down, having healthy debate, using diverging opinions to challenge themselves and together developing plans to make the best decisions for the whole. We need more working together. We need to take the best and most creative ideas from everyone involved. You keep it up!!! Pamela Paladino

I really like these comments: 1) I'm also proud to be an independent-minded Democrat who will reach out to as many people as possible -- including Republicans and Independents -- if it would help me serve the people of my district, and 2) No party and no individual has a monopoly on good ideas. Some Democrats could learn something from the former Governor. Referring specifically to a certain sitting Governor who hasn't acted like much of a Democrat with regards to folks with developmental disabilities on the DDA Waiting List. Hey Maryland: we're 43rd! Lyda Larkins Astrove
