Downtown Rockville, a sign of good fund-raising and an escalation of
what has already been a vigorous year-long campaign. Following is her
press release.
STATE SENATE CANDIDATE
KAGAN OPENS HQ IN DOWNTOWN ROCKVILLE
Campaign Marks
First Anniversary with Renewed “Clean 17” Challenge
(ROCKVILLE,
JUNE 15, 2010) In a vote of confidence for the kind of Smart-Growth
development she’s promoting in her campaign, Cheryl Kagan today opened
her headquarters on the ground floor of 414 Hungerford Drive (Route 355)
in downtown Rockville, just steps from Town Square, County and City
government, and the Metro.
“Locating homes and businesses in town
saves energy, preserves open space, promotes fitness, and leads to a
greater sense of community,” said Kagan, candidate for the State Senate
in District 17, which consists of Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Garrett
Park. “After setting up the office yesterday, my staff and I were able
to walk to Rockville City Hall for the Flag Day ceremony.”
Today
is also the campaign’s first anniversary. In the past year, Kagan has
knocked on doors and attended community events, meeting with literally
thousands of District 17 residents, listening to their ideas and
concerns, and sharing her plans for the future.
Kagan has already
taken a voluntary step towards reducing the influence of big money in
politics by cutting in half the maximum campaign contribution she will
accept-- her “Clean Seventeen” pledge. In addition, she has voluntarily
closed the so-called LLC loophole. “While it makes raising money a
little more challenging, we are including more people in the process,
which is healthy for democracy,” said Kagan. She repeated her call that
all other candidates in the District join her in this commitment to
grass roots fundraising.
Kagan has been endorsed by the Maryland
League of Conservation Voters and by NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, which
called her the “real leader” for reproductive choice in the District 17
race. The Washington Post has called the District 17 contest the
“marquee Senate race” and Maryland Politics Watch has consistently named
it the #1 Race to Watch.
Kagan represented District 17 for eight
years in the Maryland House of Delegates. A Montgomery County native,
she has done legislative, political, and nonprofit work at the federal,
state, and local level.
