SENATE CANDIDATE CHERYL KAGAN, ‘VOICE FOR WORKING FAMILIES,’ HOLDS CONCERT
Gaithersburg Event for SEIU-Endorsed State Senate Hopeful
Published: Thursday, June 24, 2010 7:00 am(ROCKVILLE, June 24, 2010) Fresh from her endorsement by a leading advocate for working families, State Senate candidate Cheryl Kagan will hold a musical campaign event in Gaithersburg this Sunday (for event information, click here). Award-winning acoustic singer-songwriter John Flynn will headline the event at Olde Towne brew pub, Growlers. Kagan, candidate for District 17 in central Montgomery County, was endorsed this week by the Service Employees International Union-Maryland and D.C. State Council and SEIU Local 500, which called her a “strong voice...committed to issues important to working families.”
“I’m very proud to have the support of a working-families advocate like SEIU,” said Kagan, whose district encompasses Rockville, Gaithersburg and Garrett Park. “It’s particularly appropriate that I received this important endorsement the same week as my concert, since folk music has always expressed the struggles of working people.”
SEIU represents over 45,000 health care, property service, and public sector workers in Maryland and Washington DC. Kagan has already won the endorsements of the Sierra Club, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, and the Maryland League of Conservation Voters.
“Tough times like these call for smart, energetic leadership to promote economic development and create jobs,” said Kagan, who has backed Smart Growth as a boon to both the economy and the environment and pledged to tackle the state’s fiscal crisis in a way that protects the middle class.
Kagan represented District 17 for eight years in the Maryland House of Delegates. A Montgomery County native, Cheryl has done legislative, political, and nonprofit work at the federal, state, and local levels.
