Montgomery County Public Schools students are enjoying a day off today as many local schools are being used as polling places for Primary Election Day in Maryland.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m. so voters still have time to cast their ballots.

District 17 State Senate candidate Cheryl Kagan and supporter John Schlichting greet Kentlands voters on September 14.

Kentlands, Lakelands and Quince Orchard Park voters will cast their ballots at Rachel Carson Elementary, Lakelands Park Middle and Diamond Elementary schools respectively. Although there are 621,569 registered voters in Montgomery County, so far, officials say this morning’s turnout appears low.

“All reports from the field indicate low turnout,” said Marjorie Roher, Montgomery County’s Board of Elections Public Information Officer.

Roher said official voter turnout numbers will not be available until later.

“The individual polling places will post numbers around 1 p.m., but there is no data transferred here until the end of the day,” said Roher.

Voters were trickling into Rachel Carson Elementary School and Lakelands Park Middle School early this morning to cast their ballot while candidates and their supporters were doing some last minute campaigning in the adjacent parking lots.

Kentlands resident, and former Gaithersburg City Council member, John Schlichting is supporting Cheryl Kagan in the District 17 state senate race. Schlichting was campaigning alongside Kagan this morning in Kentlands while her husband greeted voters in Lakelands.

Mayor Sidney Katz has endorsed incumbent Jennie Forehand in the same race and the mayor predicts it is going to be a close race.

Lakelands resident and Republican candidate Craig Frick is running for the House of Delegates in District 17.
