Voter turnout in Kentlands, Lakelands and Quince Orchard Park was well under 20 percent on primary day.
According to an election summary report for Lakelands Park Middle School, only 12.31 percent of voters cast a ballot on September 14. The turnout was slightly better in Kentlands with 14.56 percent of eligible voters turning out at Rachel Carson Elementary School. At Diamond Elementary, where Quince Orchard Park (QOP) votes and West Riding, the turnout was the best of the three precincts with 15.52 percent of voters casting a ballot. Montgomery County’s overall turnout was 19.88 percent.
Although she lost the election, District 17 State Senate Democratic candidate Cheryl Kagan actually won more votes in Kentlands and Lakelands than incumbent Senator Jennie Forehand, according to election summary reports.
Montgomery County Council candidate Rebecca Wagner received more votes at Rachel Carson Elementary than any other Council candidate in the Democratic at-large race even though she lost countywide. Wagner also edged out newcomer Hans Reimer (one of four winners) at the Diamond Elementary precinct.
Attention is now turning to the general election scheduled for November 2. One local race to watch is the District 17 House of Delegates, which includes Lakelands resident Craig Frick on the Republican ticket. Other Republicans vying for the seat are Daniel Campos and Josephine Wang. The three will also face the District 17 Democrat incumbents, Kumar Barve, James Gilchrist and Luiz Simmons. Voters pick three on Election Day.
